What kind of edutainment content is included on the mat?
Our mat includes the history of durian plantations in Singapore, local durian picking culture, botanical information about durian trees and durian fruits, and lots of interesting fun facts associated with durian. We’ve also sprinkled in quizzes, activities and prompts to encourage sharing and interaction.
Is this a timed experience? Why is it 1-hour of edutainment?
Nope! Go at your own pace. We just estimated that the content will take you and your friends an hour to go through!
What is this 15-minute audio story?
This audio story is a retelling of Kray Chen’s short film, Durian-Picking (2015), which was featured in the 2018 Singapore International Film Festival. In the film, Kray follows his dad on a late-night durian-picking adventure, encountering other durian pickers and a tropical thunderstorm that causes durians to hail down on them. This new audio version puts you in the centre of the action and lets you experience the intensity of Singapore’s forests from the comfort of your home. As durian hunting is illegal, this might be your only chance to try!
This audio piece was created for the online group exhibition, If Forest Talks, curated by Kent Chan, part of Singapore Art Week 2021 and sponsored by National Arts Council.

Is the mat easy to clean?
Yup! We made sure to pick a material that was durable and easy to maintain. Wipe down with a dishwashing liquid and hang dry.
Durian Picnic Party Pack
What kind of durians are you providing?
In partnership with 99 Old Trees, we’re providing fresh Mao Shan Wang from trees that are at least 15 years old. Durians are selected for their rich, intense, bitter sweet taste.
Are your durians good? Don’t cheat my money leh!
Experts from 99 Old Trees will guarantee quality and pre-check your durians by cutting a small “X” at the bottom. We’re also delivering them directly from Pahang, Malaysia to your home within 24-hours for maximum freshness.
Although we take every precaution, we’re still dealing with fresh, whole fruit. 99 Old Trees has a 100% replacement guarantee and you can contact them if you have any quality issues.

Why choose to deliver whole durians instead of vacuum- sealed?
We remember eating with bare hands from whole durians, on newspaper mat on the floor. Most of us have never had to handle or crack open our own durian, so we wanted to prioritize that experience. Our mat compliments this with instructions on opening whole durians and washing up with durian husks.
Are the durians difficult to open?
Make sure you work those biceps! Just kidding! 99 Old Trees will cut a small “X” on the bottom of your durian to ensure quality and to make opening much easier. Your durian will be held tight with rubber bands during transit. To open, remove the bands and try to pry open the segments with your hands. Remember to use cloth or thick gloves just to be safe! If it's too hard, use a knife to score the husk, extending the pre-cut "X" before splitting it along the seam with your hands again.
Delivery
How long does delivery take?
If you purchased the picnic mat only, you’ll receive it within 7 days. For the durian party pack, your delivery is fulfilled by 99 Old Trees. You’ll receive your mat and durian together between 7pm-9.30pm on your chosen date, either Jan 29, 30 or 31.
How will my items be delivered?
The picnic mat is delivered in a long roll, 120cm by 5cm, to prevent creasing. Durians will be delivered in bags alongside your rolled picnic mat. We recommend that you store the mat rolled up, but if you don’t mind creases, it folds up easily too!

IF FORESTS TALK
Waiting for Durian is part of the online exhibition If Forests Talk.
“If you get your hands dirty and dig around the fallen trunk you can discover string upon strings of mycelium reaching deep into the ground. Not unlike the internet and the neural-network of your own embodiment that allows you to hear this”
- Nina Djekić, from her audio piece
If Forests Talks is an online programme that looks at the tropical rainforest through the lens of artists. Nature, greenery and rainforests within Singapore are often seen through logics rooted in extraction - for botanical, recreational and consumptive purposes. The project seeks to paint the tropical rainforests in a different light, through a series of new works that draws lineage to the artists’ existing artworks, wherein the tropical rainforest had featured prominently.
Through the form of videos and audio pieces, the artists themselves revisit their past works to engage with the other-than-human domains of the rainforests, which re-emerges as the site for tradition, futurity, temporary communities and choreography.
Works are online from 21 January until 28 February 2021
Featuring works by Kray Chen, Melinda Lauw, Nina Djekić, Zarina Muhammad, Zachary Chan and Yeo Siew Hua
Curated by Kent Chan
